If you’ve seen this tumblog, you know I like Top Gear, not just because they like the Mini (which they do) but because the talented chaps at the BBC love cars.
One of my favorite cartoons grownig up was Speed Racer, after netflixing some speed racer DVD’s the other day I noticed something interesting……… drivers died.
That’s right there were explosions, carnage, and body parts after a crash, something that would probably be illegal in a cartoon today but I loved it because there was risk that made it exciting.
Top Gear is much the same, the characters don’t just love cars they hate others and smash them with reckless abandon. They don’t just go fast, they aren’t sublime about how much they like going fast, the viceral experience they get while driving…..something we share.
I love Top Gear, I hope they find a good home here in the US, we have a different kind of love for cars, we need our vehicles to provide function as well as that viceral driving experience. The US is a wider more open place we like a little adventure in our stuff, must be why we started racing “trucks”.
See you in the back country Top Gear, hope you’re up for it.
