Where has the magic gone
At the LeMay grand opening last weekend I had the impassioned argument with my wife and fellow car buffs about the magic of the automobile and its dilution. Walking among the new displays at LeMay I find myself asking questions about particular cars, how did this one influence design or manufacture or performance. I can’t imagine young folks asking those questions. For the most part people under 20 were few and in between. There were only a handful of kids willing to sit in the mini and pretend. I brought a few hotwheels mini coopers to give away to kids that had a real interest, only gave away one. It feels like LeMay is trying to capture that magic, the sense of effortless motion and teleportation that the car can afford. If you work on your own car you know how complicated they can be and how hard it is to capture that feeling. This museum will cycle 3500 cars in the collection, it will sort of be in motion with the collection, and in that way there’s bound to be some of that magic in there somewhere,
